Selling a Maxed-Out Mac: Why Instant Quotes Undervalue Max, Ultra and Big-Storage Configurations
The short answer: Instant online quotes are built around common configurations, so extra memory, extra storage and higher GPU tiers often get flattened or ignored. If your Mac is a Max or Ultra, or has 64GB+ memory or 2TB+ storage, get a quote for the exact configuration from a buyer who inspects it by hand, and check it against eBay sold listings for the identical spec. Never ship a high-value Mac without insurance for the full offer amount.
Paid the same day. Every time.
- Walk in, walk out with cash. No shipping, no waiting. Usually 10–15 minutes at our Hollywood store.
- Ship it to us and we pay the day it arrives. Not 3 to 7 days later like the national buyback sites — the same day we get it.
- Insured both ways, for the full offer amount. Free FedEx label to us, and free insured return if you say no. No hassle.
Same box, very different value — the chip, memory and storage inside decide the price.
On Reddit you see the same question every week: "I have an M4 Max Mac Studio with 4TB — what's it worth?" or "M1 Max, 32GB, 1TB — every site offers me the same as the base model." The people answering usually say "check eBay" and move on.
That advice is right, but it skips the real problem: most quote tools cannot see what makes your Mac expensive.
Why Automated Quotes Get High-Spec Macs Wrong
- They price the model, not the machine. Many estimators ask for the chip and a condition grade, then offer one number per family. A 128GB Mac Studio and a 36GB one can land on the same quote.
- Storage menus stop early. If the form only goes up to 1TB, your 4TB or 8TB SSD is priced as 1TB.
- GPU tiers are invisible. Max and Ultra chips come with different GPU core counts. Very few forms ask, so the higher tier is free money for the buyer.
- Fewer sales means more caution. High-spec machines sell less often, so automated systems lean low to protect themselves.
None of this means the buyer is dishonest. It means a form cannot do the job a person can.

How to Get the Right Number for a High-Spec Mac
1. Write down the full configuration
Apple menu → About This Mac → More Info → System Report. Note the chip, CPU and GPU core counts, memory and storage. On a MacBook, also note battery cycle count and condition (System Settings → Battery). That one page is your whole sales sheet.
2. Price it from sold listings for the identical spec
Search eBay sold listings for the exact chip, memory and storage. A 1TB price tells you nothing about a 4TB machine. Then take off the fees, shipping and return risk you would carry selling it yourself — on a $3,000 machine that is real money.
3. Get a quote from someone who inspects by hand
If an online form will not let you enter your real storage or GPU tier, do not accept its number. Call or bring the machine to a buyer who checks the actual configuration in front of you.
4. Get the offer in writing before you hand it over
Ask what the quote assumes — memory, storage, GPU cores, condition — and whether it can change after inspection. A buyer who will not commit to the configuration they are paying for is pricing the base model.
If You Ship It: Insurance Matters More Here Than Anywhere
Prepaid buyback labels usually carry the carrier's default declared value, about $100. That is a rounding error on a phone. On a $2,700 Mac Studio it is a disaster. If the box is lost or crushed, you get $100, and the company that sent the label loses nothing.
Ask for insurance for the full offer amount, in writing, before anything ships. And remember that with any mail-in buyer, the final inspection happens after you have given up the machine — if the quote drops on arrival, most people just accept it rather than pay to get it back.
When Selling It Yourself Is the Better Option
We will say this plainly: for some top-end machines, a private sale to the right end user pays more than any buyer. A video editor or developer who needs exactly 128GB will pay for it. That route makes sense when:
- You have time — specialist machines can take weeks to find their buyer.
- You can sell safely — cash or a bank transfer that has already landed, met somewhere with cameras, and you erase the Mac only after you are paid.
- No local buyer will appraise it properly. If nobody near you will look at the real configuration, a marketplace reaches more people.
How We Handle High-Spec Macs
This is most of what we do. We read the actual configuration — chip, GPU cores, memory, storage — and price that machine, not the family it belongs to.
- Walk in to 1947 N. Cahuenga Blvd. #104, Hollywood. We check it in front of you and you leave with cash, usually in 10–15 minutes.
- Mail-in with a free FedEx label insured for the full offer amount. Paid the same day it arrives. Rejected offers shipped back free.
- Have a better written offer? Send it to us. We will do our best to beat it.

Common Questions
Why is my online quote the same as the base model?
Most automated estimators price by model family and condition. If the form does not ask for memory, storage or GPU cores, those upgrades are not in the number. Get a hand appraisal for the exact configuration.
How much is an M4 Max Mac Studio worth?
Up to $2,700 at MacPro-LA in top configuration (128GB, 8TB), September 2026. Configurations with less memory or storage are worth less; get a quote for yours.
How much is an M1 Max MacBook Pro worth in 2026?
Up to $1,800 for the 14-inch and $2,000 for the 16-inch at MacPro-LA, in top configuration (64GB, 8TB). A 32GB / 1TB machine sits below those figures.
Is it safe to ship a $3,000 Mac to a buyback company?
Only if it is insured for the full offer amount, in writing, and the buyer will return it free if you reject a revised offer. Default prepaid labels cover about $100.
Do you buy Mac Pro and Ultra machines?
Yes — working Mac Pro, Mac Studio Ultra and Max machines from 2020 and newer.
